10 Catastrophe Plane Crashes Killed Many People On Board

10. Pan Am 747-100; near Lockerbie, Scotland:


         Pan Am Flight 103 was a routinely planned Pan Am transatlantic plane from Frankfurt to Detroit, through London and New York. On 21 December 1988, N739PA, the flight working the transoceanic leg of the course, was decimated by a terrorist bomb, murdering every one of the 243 passengers and 16 crew, in what got to be known as the Lockerbie bombarding. 7. Saudia L1011-200; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia:



     On Tuesday, 19 August 1980, Saudia Flight 163 was a scheduled passenger flight of Saudia that caught fire after takeoff from Riyadh International Airport (now the Riyadh Air Base) on a flight to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.  All 287 passengers and 14 crew on board the Lockheed L-1011-200 TriStar, registration HZ-AHK, died after the aircraft made an emergency landing back at the Riyadh airport.
   
      At the time, the disaster was the second deadliest single aircraft catastrophe ever, after Turkish Airlines Flight 981. It's the 6th deadliest plane calamity, after the Tenerife airport disaster, Japan Airlines Flight 123, the Charkhi Dadri mid-air crash, Turkish Airlines Flight 981, and Air India Flight 182. It was also the highest death toll of any aviation accident in Saudi Arabia and the most noteworthy loss of life of any mischance including a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar anywhere on the planet. It is additionally the deadliest flying catastrophe that did not include an accident on the on impact or mid-flight break up.

6. Air India 747-200; the Atlantic Ocean, near the Irish coast:
